Emanuel was born on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, and immigrated to Canada at the age of nine. His articles have appeared in TWAS and on the website of the Canadian Centre for Azorean Research and Studies. His story “Avó Lives Alone” was a finalist in the Writers Union of Canada 20th Annual Short Prose Competition for Developing Writers in 2013 and was recently published in Memória: An Anthology of Portuguese Canadian Writers.
